You may need planning permission, particularly where an outdoor unit is being installed. In some cases we may opt for a unit such as a Panasonic RAC Solo which is a monobloc unit and doesn’t require an outdoor unit, just two small vents to outside.
This is an area where UK-wide advice found online can be misleading because planning rules differ between England and Scotland. Scotland has permitted development rights for certain domestic air source heat pumps and split systems under Class 6H, but the current Scottish wording requires qualifying equipment to be used for domestic heating or hot water.
Edinburgh also has a large number of conservation areas, listed buildings and properties within the World Heritage Site, where additional restrictions may apply.
We therefore recommend confirming the planning position for the individual property before installation rather than assuming permission is not required.

Yes. Most modern domestic split air conditioning systems are actually air to air heat pumps, which can reverse their refrigeration cycle to provide efficient space heating as well as cooling.
In cooling mode, the system transfers heat from inside your home to the outside. In heating mode, this process is reversed and heat is extracted from the outdoor air and transferred indoors.
The Energy Saving Trust describes air to air heat pumps as systems capable of both heating and cooling rooms. This means they can be useful throughout the year rather than only during hot weather.
If you are adding cooling where you previously didn’t have any method of cooling, it will increase electricity consumption whenever the system operates.
However, modern inverter air conditioning systems can be highly efficient. Rather than repeatedly switching the compressor fully on and off, inverter systems adjust their output to match the demand in the room.
When used for heating, the comparison is different because an air to air heat pump may reduce your use of another heating fuel. Heat pumps transfer heat rather than generating all of their heat directly from electricity, meaning they can deliver considerably more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume.
Actual running costs depend on the system efficiency, room temperature, weather, insulation, electricity tariff and how the system is used. For this reason, we do not guarantee a particular saving or running cost.

An air to air heat pump can provide the space heating normally supplied by radiators, and individual indoor units can be installed in several rooms and run off a single outdoor unit. However, most domestic air to air systems do not provide domestic hot water (there are units on their way to the market that can deliver hot water), so another method is normally required for showers, baths and hot taps.
For some homes, particularly smaller properties, extensions, highly insulated homes or properties without a conventional wet heating system, air to air heating can be an attractive option. The indoor units are typically installed at high level, leaving more wall space for furniture or just creating a clean and clear space that would otherwise be occupied by a radiator.
In other homes it may make more sense to retain the existing central heating system and use air conditioning for supplementary heating and summer cooling.
Modern residential air-conditioning systems can be extremely quiet when correctly selected, positioned and installed.
Noise varies according to manufacturer, model, fan speed and operating conditions. Some premium domestic systems publish indoor sound-pressure levels as low as approximately 19 dBA during quiet operation.
The outdoor unit also produces sound from its compressor and fan, so its position needs careful consideration, particularly in densely populated areas of Edinburgh where neighbouring properties may be close.
A noise level survey therefore forms part of the design process rather than simply positioning the outdoor unit wherever is most convenient.

A single, wall mounted indoor unit is normally intended to control the temperature of the room or connected open-plan area in which it is installed.
It should not be assumed that one unit will effectively cool several closed bedrooms simply because they are nearby. If they are separated by closed doors there will be no air flow from one space to another.
For multiple rooms, a multi-split air conditioning system can connect several indoor units to one outdoor condenser. Each room can then have its own indoor unit and individual temperature control.
The appropriate arrangement depends on the cooling and heating requirement of each room.
Regular servicing is strongly recommended.
A professional service allows the system to be checked for correct operation, cleanliness, drainage, electrical condition and signs of refrigerant or mechanical problems.
